Eternal Egypt

This web site was created with a 2.5 million dollar grant from IBM and it shows. I have yet to explore it fully. But, the first thing I clicked on blew me away. It was a mix of shockwave and (I am Guessing) VRML that allows you to view Tutankhamun's tomb as it was when it was first uncovered by Howard Carter in 1922(?) in a roaming 3d environment.
The Sphinx still has its nose, and King Tutankhamun's tomb is still crowded with gilded furniture...
...Want to know what King Tut's tomb looked like when it was uncovered by Howard Carter in 1922? A 360-degree virtual reconstruction shows you every colorful detail.

'Foetus' in garden sparks police alert

Ok, I know that a foetus is a fetus but what the heck is a homeholder? I'm guessing either homeowner or house sitter, but I digress. A home-something found this doohickey and called the police who apparently freaked out and called in forensics and the force's surgeon only to have the surgeon's dog discover that it was a toy by chewing on it.

I would love to see the bill for all of this...

ESA Prepares Mission to Crash on Mars

No, wait. That's supposed to be "search for life" on Mars...
Before humans can leave their boot prints on the dusty surface of Mars, many questions have to be answered and many problems solved. One of the most fundamental questions – one that has intrigued humankind for centuries – is whether life has ever existed on Mars, the most Earthlike of all the planets.

Through its long-term Aurora Programme of solar system exploration, ESA is already preparing a series of robotic missions that will reveal the Red Planet’s secrets and pave the way for a human expedition in decades to come...

The Russians call them Almas and believe they are the missing link

I have just recently discovered bahnhof.se which has some pretty interesting articles if you can hack the sometimes poor translations reminiscent of Pravda...
"Hairy creatures on two legs has have been reported in Russia for time immoral. Contrary to the ridicule surrounding American Bigfoot, Almas is treated very serious seriously by the Russian Academy of Science which aims to prove to a skeptic world, that these creatures is are the missing link(s) we so long have been waiting for that we have been waiting for.

One can be suspicious of the Russians for many reasons, but they are more open than their colleagues in the west towards the possibility of unknown animals in general and the so called snowman in particular. Or "Almas" (wild man) as the Russians call them."

Prof sees light at end of death's tunnel

The existence of an afterlife is a mystery that has plagued religion, philosophy and psychology since their conception - until now.

For seven years, Gary Schwartz, a UA professor and director of the Center for Frontier Medicine in Biofield Science, has been conducting afterlife experiments and research that he believes prove the survival of human consciousness after death...

Holy Cow

Rense.com has a staggering list of things made from cattle:
In light of the potentially catastrophic spread of Mad Cow/nvCJD prions worldwide (UN WHO statement) throughout the food chain and environment, and my continuing call for completely new, mandatory universal medical/dental sterilization protocols - including the absolute cessation of the reuse of all invasive instruments and equipment - this incredible list will come as quite a surprise to many.

I've broken most of the items down into Medical, Food, and General/Industrial categories to facilitate a grasp of the enormity of the use of animal products in our lives and the potential vectors of Mad Cow/CJD prions...

3D reconstruction of Mars

Some very short, yet neat 3d animations of Mars that were extrapolated from the 3d still images in WMV and MPG formats. Seeing this makes me wonder why the heck a 400 million dollar probe doesn't have a video camera onboard...

The Autism Quotient

THESE DAYS, NEW THEORIES about how the human brain works are everywhere. Whether it's a magazine feature on the brain's evolutionary history, or a book purporting to reveal the origins of consciousness, or a newspaper report on the discovery of a new neurological center ("This is where a craving for chocolate comes from!"), there's no lack of fascinating hypotheses about how we, as a species, are wired...

Now the Pentagon tells Bush: climate change will destroy us

Pentagon warns of a threat that can't be solved by bombing the bejesus out of a third world country:
A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world.

Upstairs at Graceland

So, if you can believe the site these are "leaked" pictures of the upstairs at Graceland. This only fascinates me because I am not supposed to be seeing them (if it is indeed the upstairs). It could be the living room of any overdecorated trailer of that period but it isn't nearly fluffytack as the downstairs which is open to visitors. Incidentally I believe I just made up the word fluffytack (possibly inspired by linkydinky) but feel free to use it...

Nasca Lines Imaged from Orbit

The European Space Agency's Proba spacecraft imaged the Nasca region of Peru; famous for its giant lines and animal figures. The photos were taken from an altitude of 600 km, and clearly show the straight lines (the animals are too faint to see with this spacecraft). Although the markings were created more than 2,000 years ago, the region is so dry they've barely been weathered. Increased human activity, including roads and farming is starting to have an impact, though, and these satellite photos will help scientists track the changes.

Also, here's a nice little gallery with some arial shots of the site and some ponderings as to their meaning.

Did the aboriginal really see live plesiosaurs?

The aboriginal myths and legends are called "Dream Time". Their stories contains a plethora of monsters of which many are believed to be mythological. Others might refer to real creatures and the aboriginal themselves insists they are made of flesh and blood. Some of them look like the plesiosaurs...

Curse of the Argonaut's treasure

An entire archaeologist's family dies after unearthing a treasure.

As soon as the treasure was discovered, it was transported to St. Petersburg's Hermitage. Specialists were stunned after seeing the find. They have never had such complete collection of artifacts. Each piece of the collection is worth nearly $50 000. However, few know what price the archaeologist and his family had to pay for it. Andrei Chamkin had been searching for the treasure for 15 years. Until one day, he finally found it.

Stranger: 'You'll be playing Jesus'

The lead actor in Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" says six months before he auditioned for the part he received an eerie sign.

A stranger came up to him and said, "You'll be playing Jesus," James Caviezel related in a documentary to be aired Sunday on PAX TV.

Mirror to the Soul

Article on the resurgence of the Tarot
Gazing out the second floor window of a creaky, century-old Victorian in downtown Boulder, Ashleigh Armitage can see a half-dozen crosses. There's a Catholic school across the street, an Episcopal church next door, and a Catholic house of worship on the corner.

The State of the Blog

I managed to get a little work done on the site this weekend. I replaced the Amazon keyword thingies with a javascript powered rss feed from about.com which usually has some pretty good articles . I also, for the first time in the almost six weeks I have been using Blogger as a content manager, looked at the site in Internet Explorer and fixed any display problems that I noticed so that the site now looks pretty much the same in Firefox .8, Mozilla 1.6 and IE 6. If you have any recommendations as to how I can further improve things drop me a line at mail@paranormalreport.com. I also added some weirdness to the "weird pictures" section of the site so go have a look...

Spooky subatomic behavior seen on grander scale

Eight decades after one of the weirdest discoveries in the history of science -- that subatomic matter is wavelike -- Austrian scientists are studying the same phenomenon on a much bigger scale, in giant molecules of carbon.
One moment it's in one place, then it instantaneously appears in another place, then another, etc. Recall the golfing comedy "Caddyshack," in which the golf course gopher poked its head from one hole, then another, then another, and so on.

Shooting Stuff For Science

Have you ever wondered what it would look like to shoot a balloon filled with glitter with a paintball gun and then photograph it using high speed flash photography? Of course you haven't, but Chris Pasterczyk's 1998-'99 physics class did and the pictures are incredible. They shot lots of food too, because that's what physicists do...

Dibbuk Haunted Jewish Wine Cabinet Box

I don't really want to talk about anything between September and January, so I'll just say that I'm selling the box now for a couple reasons:
    1. Around October 6th, I started feeling bad, with trouble sleeping. This problem has persisted through today.
    2. I live alone now, and as of late I have noticed replacing a lot of burnt out lightbulbs, and getting many unusual car repairs (transmission fluid was burned out of the reservoir.)
    3. I've started seeing things, sort of like large vertical dark blurs in my periphreal vision.
    4. I smell something like juniper bushes or stingy ammonia in my garage often, and I have no idea what from.
    5. Most disturbingly, last Tuesday (1-27-2004), my hair began to fall out. Today (Friday) it's about half gone. I'm in my early twenties, and I just got a clean blood test back from the doctor's. Maybe it's stress related, I don't know.
