Ex-atheist desribes NDE

Most near death experiences are filled with fluffy clouds and dead relatives that want to chat you up but occasionally hell is visited upon an individual and that's when things get really interesting. Howard storm is one of those people who went to hell and came back. He describes in detail how he was assaulted by dark beings in his NDE and how he overcame their attacks.... southcoasttoday.com

More Whale Mayhem

A couple of days ago the I featured a pic of the Taiwanese exploding whale and judging from the search stats thingy people really like whale explosions so here's another one.

This one is from Oregon. The beastie decided to beach itself and was beginning to smell so the Oregon State Highway division, in all its infinite wisdom, decided to blow it up. What follows is best descibed by the TV reporter who narrates the film as:
"The blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds"
Here's the Video in Quicktime format [779k .mov]

and here's a short vid [996k mpeg] of a whale eating an ice fisherman that is probably CGI but whales are shady so who knows....

Phantom plane mystery deepens

THE mystery surrounding the sighting of an historic low-flying aeroplane near Barnoldswick has deepened.

Following last week's story in which a couple told how they saw a Lancaster bomber-type plane on collision course with houses near the Rolls-Royce site at Bankfield, Skipton aerial phenomena expert Donald Cooper was inundated with phone calls from people all over Craven who reported similar sightings.

For $2500 per gram you can deliver whatever you would like to the moon. The company Transorbital plans to send an orbiter to the moon to spend 3 months gathering video that will include pics of the Apollo moon lander site. The vehicle will then smash into the surface. Your stuff will be inside a protective capsule that will be buried 4 feet under the lunar surface. Yahoo!

Mindful Therapy

Contracostatimes has an interesting article that summarizes recent studies pointing to the health benefits of what they called "secular meditation".

Divination as a tool for Soul-searching

"Kim Lohman recently found herself trying to figure out the reason for her son's declining grades. She felt there was more to it than him simply not wanting to do his homework.

Grounding him had not worked. Neither had taking away his PlayStation and music privileges.

So Lohman did what she always does in a time of crisis: She consulted the tarot cards. Lohman, who owns a New Age shop, sat down in her Modesto home one night and shuffled the deck. She spread the cards before her accordingly."

Opportunity, Spirit Update

NASA released a high-res color image of the outcrop spotted by the Opportunity rover. The outcrop, described as a layer cake, may be sedimentary and may offer more evidence of ancient oceans and lakes on Mars.

Article on the geological implications at astrobio.net

Before Opportunity can explore the outcrop it still has to stand up and free itself from the lander.

Also, Spirit has sent back it's first pic since it crashed last week.

Scientists Grow Gold in the Lab.

"Researchers from the Cooperative Research Centre for Landscape Environments and Mineral Exploration grew gold nuggets in the lab." The bacteria and fungi deposited atoms of gold onto the surface of the nuggets allowing them to grow over millions of years "like a potato". HERALDSUN

Witch bottle unearthed in Lincolnshire

"A chilling reminder of our superstitious past has been unearthed from a rural farmhouse.

The "witch bottle" was discovered buried in old foundations in the Lincolnshire village of Navenby.

Containing bent pins, human hair and perhaps urine, the bottles were supposed to protect a household against evil spells. "

New Form of Matter Discovered

A new state of matter has been discovered. The new matter will be called fermionic condensate and is composed of a cloud of potassium atoms cooled to a billionth of a degree above absolute 0. Its creators say that it's "a scientific breakthrough in providing a new type of quantum mechanical behavior."

Who names this stuff? We had solids liquids, gases and plasmas which was fine but in 1995 they discovered/created a new one and named it "Bose-Einstein Condensates." Really? They couldn't call those Boses or just make up a word. Fermionic Condensate indeed. How about gloop? or blotz? Yeah, I like blotz.

Mauritania's 'wife-fattening' farm

"A generation ago, over a third of women in the country were force-fed as children - Mauritania is one of the few African countries where, on average, girls receive more food than boys.

Now only around one in 10 girls are treated this way. The treatment has its roots in fat being seen as a sign of wealth - if a girl was thin she was considered poor, and would not be respected..."

Study to test OBE

A dozen hospitals in the UK are involved in a fascinating experiment to determine the legitimacy of out of body experiences or OBE's. They will be placing symbols around the hospitals that are only visible to people having OBE's and testing them later. They didn't say exactly what kind of symbols though I imagine they would be similar to those used to test ESP (little squiggly lines and squares). Article is at BBC

Neanderthals were not our Ancestors

At least not most of us...
Paleoanthropologists at NYU have conducted the most "mathematically rigorous" study to date analyzing the skulls of primates and have concluded that Neanderthals are separate species from humans. What does this mean to the grand scheme of things? I don't know. I do know that this article will be linked to a lot of creationist websites before the day is over. Here's the article at Eurekalert.

Southerner Develops French Accent Overnight.

Berley Stabler, an American from South Carolina, woke up one day with a French accent. He was the victim of a stroke and later diagnosed with a very real, yet rare, condition called "foreign-accent syndrome". FAS is a disorder that is caused by brain damage that forces the brain to reprogram itself in order to function properly. In doing so it leaves the sufferer with a distinct foreign accent.

New Yorker, Judi Roberts, was also diagnosed with FAS. Though the accent her brain forced on her was decidedly British. Doctors say there have been only 20 documented cases since 1919.

"Ghosts" haunt someplace, somewhere.

Now, Back to you Diane...
If I have learned anything since I began this site it's that at least once a week a small Newspaper somewhere in the English-speaking world will feature a story on ghost hunters. The headline will always have a word in quotations like "ghost" or "spirit" which, I believe, is the reporter's way of saying I don't buy any of it. A lot of bad puns will usually be followed by cheeky banter worthy of a talking head TV news report. If the article originated in the US there is an 80% chance it will mention the movie Ghostbusters.

This week's Ghost Hunter story is brought to you by Oldham Advertiser

Is it the Editor's fault that they are always cheesy? I can hear a Jonah Jameson type guy sitting behind a desk "I got you a story about some ghost hunters and I smell whimsy in this, you hear? Whimsy!

I am just thankful there are lots of sites like TAPS that take sightings seriously.

Was Hitler defeated by Witchcraft?

On a warm August night in1940 Gerald Gardner and hundreds of other witches gathered in New Forest with a single purpose: To raise a Cone of Power to deter a Nazi invasion. In Gardner’s own words…

"That was done which may not be done except in great emergency. Mighty forces were used of which I may not speak. Now, to do this means using one's life-force."

The Cone of Power ceremony or simply called “raising power” in some circles was used by witches as early as 1588 to help defeat the Spanish Armada and as recent as 1971 in an effort by Californian witches to end the Vietnam war. What part did this ritual play in changing the outcome of these wars? Did witches help defeat Hitler?

Voynich Manuscript a Hoax?

The Voynich Manuscript is a book filled with undiscovered plants, strange symbols and even naked chicks cavorting in tubs that are connected by elaborate plumbing. The book has puzzled academics since its creation sometime in the 15th century. It has been explained as being the creation of lost civilizations and even extraterrestrials. But computer expert Gordon Rugg thinks he may have solved the mystery. He believes that the book is complete (though, incredibly elaborate) gibberish. Is it the 15th century equivalent of the Ghost in a Jar?

Psychopaths are attracted to today's business climate

"You can guess that one to two per cent of the people that you work with could have psychopathic tendencies," said Babiak, a New York-based private psychologist
