It's a Bull Market
The Sun has a great animated gif of a cow strolling into a bank.
Dilbert Inside
Occasionally, while wasting lots and lots of time on the internet I inadvertently learn something. Today I learned that microchip engineers have been doodling on microchips since the 70's. Dilbert Snoopy, and even the USS Enterprise are all etched microscopically on computer chips, photoresistors and pretty much all things silicon. The Egyptian God Annubis Guards the mask alignments on a MIPS R12000 microprocessor and Thor is artfully reproduced on a Hewlett-Packard graphics support chip. If aliens ever get around to reverse engineering the mars rovers they will find pictures of Marvin the Martian etched on the image sensors.

Stinky cats poison vet in Sweden Boxers exchange vows then blows in the ring Muons May Unlock Secrets of Teotihuacan
"Does the Pyramid of the Sun harbor any tombs? What might such tombs reveal about the society that two millennia ago built one of Mesoamerica's largest pyramids? In an experiment à la Luis Alvarez, who in the late 1960s concluded that there are no tombs in Egypt's Chephren pyramid, a collaboration of physicists and archaeologists hopes to glean answers to these questions by monitoring the passage of muons through the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, 50 kilometers northeast of Mexico City..." physicstoday.org

'Mindsight' could explain sixth sense
"Some people may be aware that a scene they are looking at has changed without being able to identify what that change is. This could be a newly discovered mode of conscious visual perception, according to the psychologist who discovered it. He has dubbed the phenomenon "mindsight"... " New Scientist
Bring an Umbrella
This past month was a good one for stuff falling from the sky. Yesterday, in China as Many as 10,000 small birds dropped from the sky in what was described as "bird rain".
And in Stephens City, Virginia lots of "brown stuff" fell from nowhere. And there was the soy of a large piece of ice that fell through the roof of a New Zealand couples house. Mas Carronautas from Cuba
"The '59 Buick converted into a boat and headed to Florida Keys with 11 Cuban migrants onboard has been sunk by the U.S. Coast Guard and those onboard will be taken back to Cuba, according to an exile activist in Key West." Article at herald.com
I have long thought that anyone this creative and brave should be allowed to stay. I mean really, if building a boat fron a classic American car isn't an American thing to do what is? Last year a group built a boat from an old truck and almost made it. Making for one of the best pictures of 2003. Film crew searches for Sinatra ghost

Undergraduates' work blames comet for 6th-century nuclear winter
The Sun...seems to have lost its wonted light, and appears of a bluish colour. We marvel to see no shadows of our bodies at noon, to feel the mighty vigour of the Sun's heat wasted into feebleness, and the phenomena which accompany an eclipse prolonged through almost a whole year. We have had a summer without heat. The crops have been chilled by north winds, [and] the rain is denied." -Flavius Cassiodorus 536AD
Scientists at Cardiff University, UK, believe they have discovered the cause of crop failures and summer frosts some 1,500 years ago – a comet colliding with Earth... eurekalert Banshees Evict Lotto Winner

Extrasolar Oxygen and Auroral Lights on Saturn
"Astronomers have detected the first presence of oxygen and carbon in the atmosphere of an extrasolar planet, a world already known to be venting massive amounts of gas into space." USAToday
And this is kind of old news but pretty nonetheless: "The first image of Saturn's ultraviolet aurorae taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope in October 1997, when Saturn was at a distance of 1300 million kilometres from Earth." ESA Piranha vs. Mouse
This is the kind of "real life that goes on every day" stuff that I am not particularly fond of. Yet, I love to watch. This is graphic. And by graphic I mean sick, yet interesting. Real "Trials of Life" stuff. 4 maybe 5, pirahnas vs mouse.
please do not place any wagers.. the mouse does not win. In other mousy news researchers at European Molecular Biology Laboratory have produced a mouse that can regenerate tissue. Terraforming the Red Planet
"To say that Mars is a chilly place is a bit of an understatement. The mean annual temperature on the red planet is minus 55 degrees Celsius. It is far too cold for human habitation. Which explains why those who believe that humanity one day will establish colonies on Mars take very seriously the problem of how to warm the planet up..." astrobio.net

Creepy Church Burglary in Honeoye Falls
"More disturbing to members than what was taken perhaps, is what was left behind. In the sacristy, a black cloth was placed over a mirror and the portraits of saints were turned to the wall. A shelf was rigged in a cabinet holding wooden crosses to spill on the floor when the door was opened." democratandchronicle.com
God is Pro-War
"A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;"
And I always thought that was The Byrds. Anyway, Jerry Falwell has an article in world net daily that says God is Pro-War. "One of the primary purposes of the church is to stop the spread of evil, even at the cost of human lives."... Mars Express Images
I have been following the US Mars probes so closely that I failed to notice that The Mars Express has been sending back some spectacular 3D images. Also, Linda Moulton Howe has an interview with the Michael McKay of the European Space Agency about what appears to be algae in some of the pictures.

A Study of Dreams
In doing some research on lucid dreaming I found a copy of an article in which the term was coined: A Study of Dreams by Frederik Van Eeden written in 1913. Frederik mentions several categories in addition to lucid dreams such as initial dreams, demon-dreams and vivid dreaming. I also found a copy of his book the Bride of Dreams in free ebook form. Despite being written in a stuffy 19th century styling it's none the less fascinating.
